FORSYTH, MO., September 18, 1899---'Ten O'Clock Run' is one of the mystifying expressions which the newcomer encounters in the Missouri - Kansas- Arkansas zinc and lead country. 'Eleven O'Clock Run' is another.
Missouri began mining coal in the 1840s and was the first commercial coal mining state west of the Mississippi River. Most of the early mines were underground and have since been abandoned. Surface mining didn't start in Missouri until the 1930s. By the '1960s, the majority of the coal produced in the state came from surface mines.
The Bray Mining Company operated a 100 ton mill (Missouri State Mine Inspector, 1918; Buehler 1919) and the Bull Creek Mining Company operated a 60 ton mill (Missouri State Mine Inspector, 1916, 1917; Buehler 1919); Bull Creek separated ore with a hand jig.
Pilot Knob is located in the Arcadia Valley of Iron County, Missouri, between the towns of Ironton and Pilot Knob. Pilot Knob, so named because of its distinctive shape and prominent position, reaches an elevation of 1,470 feet (450 m) rising 581 feet (177 m) above the Arcadia Valley floor and has a large deposit of iron ore in its upper regions.
