Certification The Mine Safety and Training Division issues certificates of competency to underground and surface coal miners. Effective May 1, 2013, there is a $50.00 fee for each application submitted.

Academy for Mine Training & Energy Technologies The Mining Extension Service was established in 1913 to extend the resources and expertise of West Virginia University to the coal miners of this state and consequently the nation.
This training includes three components for teaching and testing map reading skills. The first, Map Reading Basics (MRB), covers terminology and concepts needed to read and understand an underground coal mine map.
