Mining copper About 200 years ago the UK was an important world source of copper and tin and there were mines in Cornwall and Devon. These mines have now closed and today the biggest copper mines are in Chile (Escondida mine) and Indonesia (Grasberg mine).

Chilean copper-mining company Antofagasta produced 370,000 tonnes of copper in 2016, a decrease from 2015's total of 370,000 tonnes. In the first half of 2017, the company produced 346,300 tonnes of copper, a 7.1-percent increase over the same period in 2016.
The mining process begins with extraction of the ore from the ground. The ore then goes through smeltering and converting and the process ends with the refined ore being made into copper plates ready for sale to the world market (Figure 1) (2,3,4).

To a lesser extent these mines produced native copper, cuprite (red copper ore), chalcopyrite (copper pyrite) and malachite (green copper ore). Chalcocite was the principle ore of the Simsbury Mines, and bornite was the principle ore at the Bristol Mine.
The above flowsheet shows a basic copper mine process, from mine to metal. There are two distinct types of copper ore, the sulfide ore and the oxide ore. The sulfide ores are beneficiated in flotation cells, while the oxide ores are generally leached.
Copper ore is mined in our X41 and Enterprise underground mines, where it is roughly crushed, then hoisted to the surface for processing. From here, it is fed through a series of ball mills that grind the rock into a fine dust.
